House on Long Island - Port Washington, New York

This renovation of an original Levittown House involved ripping off the illegal bedrooms and bath in the existing attic and designing an entire new second floor with two bedrooms, a hall bathroom and a Master Bedroom Suite. The first floor was largely converted into loft space, removing walls to open up the living room to connect to a new study and a double height family room addition that replaced a carport. The crucial design move was to maintain the existing roof overhang so that the second floor is perceived as a series of dormers, maintaining the overall scale of the existing structure while doubling it's size.
